The Geely EX5 EM-i was awarded the maximum 5-star rating from both Euro NCAP and Australasian NCAP.
It’s no secret that the Proton eMAS 7 PHEV shares engineering IP with Geely’s EX5 EM-i, which is also sold as the E5 EM-i or STARRAY EM-i in different markets. While the eMAS 7 PHEV hasn’t yet gone through ASEAN NCAP testing, we now have confirmation that the Geely version has received the maximum five-star safety rating from both the European New Car Assessment Program (Euro NCAP) and the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP). Both results were published earlier this month on the 6th of February, prior to the Lunar New Year festivities.

While it wouldn’t be completely fair to take these findings and say that the Proton e.MAS 7 PHEV would achieve identical results, it should be noted that the underlying architecture, powertrain, and many active and passive safety systems are shared between the two. In fact, the Starray EM-i that’s sold in Australia is configured as a right-hand drive vehicle just like its Proton counterpart.

Key to the vehicle’s safety is the GEA platform, which Proton calls the GMA platform. They’re essentially the same thing with a different brand name. The GEA platform feature 3 core safety innovations – physical isolation of the powertrain components, dedicated protection of said parts and a tiered layout. The fuel tank has 140mm of clearance to prevent deformations, plus battery systems and electricals are kept separately in their own segments. This makes THIS PHEV safer than many of its non-native hybrid platforms in collisions directly to the front or rear.

GEA’s platform features six horizontal and four vertical protective frames, along with six 360° collision-protection rings surrounding the fuel tank. These elements ensure uninterrupted load-path protection for both the fuel tank and battery pack. Additionally, a stepped underbody safety design, combined with a high-strength anti-scratch beam positioned 10 mm below the battery, further enhances passive safety. Geely’s proven safety DNA is incorporated into the GEA platform, utilizing the family’s eight signature structural systems, anchored by the iconic “Cloverleaf Energy Dissipation” concept. This design effectively absorbs and distributes collision energy more efficiently and reliably across the vehicle. The Geely Starray EM-i also comes with 14 ADAS features which include Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB), Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC), and more.
