Will The NEXT Mazda MX-5 Get An Electric Powertrain Or Not

So, many are still wondering if the next-generation Mazda MX-5 (often referred to as the NE) will feature some form of electrification to comply with emission regulations.

Mazda insiders say it is unlikely to be a fully electric vehicle (EV) immediately. Instead, it will likely use a mild-hybrid (MHEV) or hybrid system to maintain its lightweight, compact, and affordable driving dynamics (what a roadster should be).

Last year when Mazda announced plans for the fifth generation of the MX-5, the ‘NE’. Ryuichi Umeshita, Mazda’s chief technical officer, explained that the car, still half a decade away, would be naturally aspirated, manual and light. The new model would NOT be electric, hybrid, or even turbocharged.

Ryuichi Umeshita, emphasized that “lightweight” remains the absolute priority, with a target weight of sub-1,000kg (2,200 lbs) for the next generation (Lotus seems to have ditched this idea). Adding large battery packs for a full EV currently conflicts with this goal.

The MX-5 is famously based on the 1962 Lotus Elan, and the 2030 Mazda Miata will use the same formula three score years and ten later. Umeshita lamented: “If all ICE engines are banned, then we have no choice”.

Like many manufacturers, Mazda is moving away from its previous positioning. In 2023, powertrain development boss Kato Matsue told : “By 2030, all our products will have some electrification. So that means the sports car is not outside of that scope.”

Did you know that the Mazda MX-5 celebrated its 35 year in 2025 and to celebrate, Mazda decided to mark this momentous occasion with the launch of a special edition model. And happily enough for Malaysian MX-5 fans, official distributor Bermaz Motor brought in this commemorative 35th Anniversary Edition to our shores!

The 35th Anniversary Edition comes exclusively in the retractable fastback (RF) body style, paired only with the 2.0-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine and a 6-speed automatic transmission. The sticker price for this particular special edition comes in at (an admittedly steep) RM315,000.
