Toyota Vios Hybrid (HEV) uses a new 4th generation fuel sipping powertrain
Toyota is calling their Vios hybrid a ‘HEV’ (Hybrid ‘Electric’ Vehicle) and it was recently launch in Malaysia with a selling price from RM103,900. This is a 4th-generation Toyota Hybrid System.
This Vios is a key step in Toyota’s “Multi-Pathway” strategy. By bringing self-charging hybrid technology to a popular, high-volume family sedan, Toyota intends to offer a practical, affordable, and immediate decarbonisation solution that doesn’t require changes to consumer charging habits or extending battery charging infrastructure.
Under the boxy family sedan shape, this Toyota Vios (HEV) uses a 1.5-litre series-parallel hybrid system which is often termed “self-charging” that combines a well proven petrol engine with electric motors to optimize fuel efficiency and acceleration without requiring plug-in charging.
The system is built on the TNGA/DNGA architecture (model 2NR-VEX) and is designed for urban efficiency with a focus on seamless electric-first driving.
As a trusted and well known B-segment car in ASEAN (often a first-time buyer model), this Vios HEV makes hybrid technology mainstream and accessible, serving as a gateway to electrified mobility without worrying about resale values.
This approach allows for instant adoption and lowered emissions without waiting for, or being dependent on, comprehensive EV charging infrastructure.

The Vios HEV is supported by local hybrid battery assembly at UMW Toyota Motor’s Bukit Raja facility, strengthening the local supply chain for future electrified models from Toyota.
The model uses a 1.5-litre hybrid system (2NR-VEX), generating 91PS (67kW) at 5,500 rpm and 121Nm of torque (4,000–4,800 rpm). The compact electric motor generator (MG2) produces 80PS (59kW) and 141Nm of torque and works with an Electronic Continuously Variable Transmission (e-CVT). The compact 0.7 kWh Lithium-ion battery pack is mounted under the rear seats.
This powertrain delivers roughly 5% stronger acceleration compared to the conventional 1.5G Vios
offering a total output of 111PS and high fuel efficiency (3.6L/100km), making it a competitive alternative to traditional internal combustion engines (ICE).

Here you can see from the pictures that we are testing the GR Sport (GR-S) variant which is priced at RM109,900 and distinguished from the non -hybrid Vios by:
- GR Sport-specific tuning for the suspension (coils and shocks).
- Tuned electric power steering for better responsiveness.
- Gazoo Racing aerokit and 17-inch alloy wheels
The battery is designed to last the life of the vehicle and UMW Toyota provides 5 years (unlimited mileage) vehicle warranty + 8 years (unlimited mileage) hybrid battery warranty. The warranty also covers the inverter and power management control ECU. Optionally, this Hybrid Electric warranty can be extended for another 2 years (9th & 10th year). (Terms and conditions apply)
This Vios HEV comes with Toyota Safety Sense (PCS, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keep Control) and a 3D Panoramic View Monitor.
The cabin features a 7-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.1-inch infotainment screen with wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay. There is also voice control if you need it but it takes time to learn your commands.
This move validates Toyota’s “Multi-Pathway” approach which is aiming for 30% xEV sales in ASEAN by 2030 by delivering a balanced mix of efficiency, usability, and accessibility, rather than relying solely on battery-electric vehicles (BEVs).
So, the immediate rival to this latest Vios is Honda City e:HEV which is already a best selling model for Honda Malaysia and has a loyal following with its sharp looks and fuel efficient hybrid powertrain. Can this latest Vios take away some of the City’s sales success?
