The Thailand-built Toyota Hilux BEV brings electric power to the pick-up truck segment.
The introduction of the Toyota Hilux BEV marks a pivotal shift for Malaysia’s best-selling pickup truck. Built on a body-on-frame platform, it is the first Toyota Global Retail Pickup BEV, engineered to meet the rigorous demands of logistics, construction, and agriculture without sacrificing the Quality, Durability, and Reliability (QDR) that has defined the nameplate since 1968.
The Timely Alternative to Diesel
This launch is more relevant than ever for Malaysian businesses and fleet operators as the price of diesel has spiked in recent weeks and is now at RM6.02/L. The Hilux BEV offers a stable, cost-effective alternative, benefiting from reduced running costs due to fewer moving parts and the lower maintenance requirements inherent to electric drivetrains.
‘Cyber Sumo’ Design and Rugged Capability
The Hilux BEV adopts a unique ‘Cyber Sumo’ styling, featuring an assertive stance, a closed-off grille for improved aerodynamics, and unique 17-inch alloy wheels.
Despite its electric heart, it remains a true off-roader:
- Wading Depth: Matches the standard Hilux with a capability of crossing water up to 700 mm deep.
- MTS Technology: The first Toyota BEV equipped with Multi-Terrain Select, including a new ‘Mogul’ mode for bumpy surfaces.
- Payload: Optimized at 750 kg, striking the perfect balance between electric range and real-world usability.
Performance and Range
Equipped with a 59.2 kWh lithium-ion battery integrated directly into the frame, the Hilux BEV delivers a total power output of 144 kW (196 ps).
- NEDC Range: Up to 315 km on a full charge, tailored for urban logistics and site-to-site operations.
- Fast Charging: A DC fast-charger can take the battery from 10% to 80% in approximately 30 minutes.
Tech-Forward Interior
The Double Cab cockpit features a 12.3-inch centre display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, complemented by a 12.3-inch digital meter for the driver. Owners also benefit from the Toyota Remote app, allowing for remote door locking/unlocking and maintenance scheduling directly from a smartphone.
Market Competition
While the Hilux BEV is a formidable pioneer, it enters a growing market where alternatives like the JAC T9 BEV are also beginning to draw attention. However, Toyota counters with an extensive nationwide service network and a robust warranty package: a 5-year/150,000 km vehicle warranty and an 8-year/unlimited mileage battery warranty.
