If you live in a landed property and can install a home wallbox charger, EV ownership is smooth, hyper-economical and convenient. If you rely 100% on public charging or live in a high-rise with strict management, it requires some forward planning.
1. Cost to Install an EV Home Charger
For most landed homes in Malaysia, total costs (charger unit + professional installation) range between RM3,000 and RM8,000, depending on your home’s electrical setup. There are a couple of options.
#Option A: Standard 7.4 kW AC Charger (Single-Phase)
Best for: Daily commuters charging overnight (adds ~35–40 km of range per hour).
Charger Unit (e.g., Wallbox, Kineta, Autel, Schneider, BYD): RM1,500 – RM3,500
Installation & Cabling: RM1,200 – RM2,500 (covers dedicated circuit, Miniature Circuit Breaker/RCBO, cable routing up to 10–15m)
Total Estimated Cost: RM3,000 – RM5,500.
#Option B: 11 kW – 22 kW AC Charger (Three-Phase)
Best for: Vehicles with larger battery packs or twin-motor setups needing faster battery top-ups.
Charger Unit: RM3,500 – RM6,000+
Installation & Heavy-Gauge Cabling: RM2,000 – RM3,500
TNB 3-Phase Upgrade (If required): RM 1,500 – RM4,000 (applies if your home currently only has single-phase supply and total household load exceeds 10 kW).

Note on TNB Approval. You do not need TNB’s approval just to plug in a wallbox, provided it uses a dedicated circuit installed by a registered Energy Commission (Suruhanjaya Tenaga) contractor. Approval is only required if you are requesting a 3-phase supply upgrade and this is a must.
How To Apply For TNB Time-of-Use (ToU) Tariff
The TNB ToU scheme allows residential customers with a Smart Meter to enjoy significantly cheaper off-peak electricity rates, making overnight EV charging the cheapest way to “fuel” your car.

Off-Peak (Cheapest Rate): 10:00 PM – 2:00 PM (Monday – Friday)
