While electric vehicles (EVs) deliver impressive acceleration, smooth rides, and zero tailpipe emissions, their rapid push toward digitization has introduced several frustrating design choices that many owners have shared with us over the past months. 

Driven by aggressive cost-cutting, minimalist aesthetic trends and sleek KOL and influencer marketing, some modern EV features often prioritize novelty over practical utility.

Below is an analysis of the most annoying features in today’s electric cars, examining why automakers introduced them and why drivers find them so inconvenient.

1. The Over-Reliance On The Touchscreen For Basic Functions

The push toward ultra-minimalist cabin design has led many manufacturers to eliminate physical buttons, switches, and knobs, burying essential functions inside complex touchscreen submenus that require less moving parts and connections.

Imagine this, adjusting the side mirrors, opening the glovebox, or changing climate control settings requires taking your eyes off the road. Without tactile feedback, simple tasks become hazardous multi-tap navigation exercises while driving.

Well, we said it before and many EV lovers ‘trashed us for it. Now safety watchdogs like Euro NCAP have introduced stricter scoring criteria, requiring physical switches for critical functions like turn signals, hazard lights, windshield wipers and even horn operations to qualify for top safety ratings.

2. Overly Aggressive Safety Warnings And Beeping

Yes, modern EVs want to tick MORE safety feature boxes than Volvo Cars who have been the ‘guardian’ of automobile safety standards for decades (well they still continue to have a high standard).

These new EVs come packed today with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) mandated by global safety regulations. However, the calibration of these systems often creates unnecessary driver fatigue (especially for the less tech savvy driver).

Take the Intelligent Speed Assist (ISA), lane-keeping warnings and driver monitoring cameras that trigger persistent bings and bongs, chimes and steering corrections (which can and will be dangerous in the less attentive hands). On narrow country roads or during minor manoeuvres around obstacles, the incessant alerts cause driver fatigue. Many drivers (like us after a short test drive to evaluate the existence of these features) disable these safety features at the start of every trip. Then, after the vehicle rests, it seems that it all resets back (not all models) and we have to switch them off one by one.

3. Artificial Engine Sounds and Simulated Gear Shifting

Because electric motors operate almost silently, regulations require Acoustic Vehicle Alerting Systems (AVAS) at low speeds to protect pedestrians. However, several electric car brands go further by piping synthetic motor sounds and simulated gear shifts into the cabin.

While car enthusiasts enjoy optional performance modes (such as simulated downshift pops in performance EVs), artificial engine whines and exaggerated futuristic hums can feel gimmicky during daily commutes. Purists (petrolheads and even some regular drivers) argue that simulating internal combustion engine (ICE) gear shifts defeats the core advantage of an electric powertrain, which is seamless and with linear acceleration.
