Detailed breakdown of 4 legacy brands that have a crossover for under RM99k
We recently had a question posed to us after our weekly BFM weekly radio show. (its Cruise Control on 89.9 every Wednesday evening from 8pm to 8.55pm). A regular listener and also DSF.my follower asked us this, ‘Am looking to change my 11-year old car and only want to to buy a non Chinese automotive brand with a budget of below RM100k’!
We didn’t ask why so specific about the origin of the brand as some buyers still have their reasons. We did ask about, type of vehicle, crossover, sedan or MPV. Well they wanted a crossover and even better if it had a nationwide after sales as they like to ‘cuti-cuti’ Malaysia regularly as it was a ‘just retired’ person who was not needing a lot of space.
So, this is our answer which we believe will also cater to many Malaysians looking to buy a new vehicle soon.
1. Proton X50 (Best All-Rounder for Performance & Feel)
The Proton X50 remains a primary choice in this price bracket. Staying under RM89,000 gets you the Executive variant but there is also the Premium and Flagship at a higher price.
Engine: 1.5L 4-cylinder Turbocharged Direct Injection paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT).
Why it stands out: Ride quality, sound insulation, and acceleration beat most competitors at this price. Updated models feature improved noise reduction and full smartphone integration (Apple CarPlay/Android Auto).
Keep in mind: Fuel consumption is slightly higher than non-turbo, lighter rivals/alternatives mentioned below.
2. Perodua Ativa (Best Value for Money)
The Perodua Ativa gives you the maximum features-per-ringgit of any crossover in Malaysia.
Engine: 1.0L 3-cylinder Turbocharged engine with D-CVT.
Why it stands out: Every variant comes standard with Advanced Safety Assist (ASA) ADAS, while top variants (AV) add adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist under RM75k. Excellent fuel economy makes it economical to run.
Keep in mind: Compact boot capacity (369L) and lighter overall road presence compared to B-segment options.
3. Honda WR-V (Best Non-National Compact SUV)
Positioned directly against the Ativa and upper-spec national cars, the WR-V brings Honda’s platform engineering down below the RM100k mark.
Engine: 1.5L DOHC i-VTEC naturally aspirated engine (121 PS / 145 Nm) with CVT.
Why it stands out: Offers standard Japanese brand reliability, strong power output for its weight, and a higher driving sightline than standard hatchbacks.
Keep in mind: Cabin maybe slightly smaller, but its nimble and fun to drive attitude will have drivers loving it on long distance rural and state roads.
4. Perodua Aruz / Toyota Rush (Best 7-Seater Utility)
If carrying 6 to 7 passengers is a strict requirement under RM100k, these twin models are the main crossover choices.
Engine: 1.5L 4-cylinder naturally aspirated engine with a 4-speed automatic.
Why they stand out: Built on a rear-wheel-drive, ladder-frame-derived chassis, they navigate flooded roads or rough terrain better than unibody city crossovers.
Keep in mind: The driving dynamic is utilitarian and body roll is noticeable compared to modern unibody crossovers like the Ativa or X50.
Final Buyer Recommendation
Choose the Proton X50 if you prioritise refined driving dynamics, punchy highway acceleration, and modern interior tech.
Choose the Perodua Ativa if you want the lowest ownership costs, low fuel bills, and safety features for under RM75k.
Choose the Honda WR-V if you want a reliable Japanese crossover under RM100,000 with fun to drive attitude.
Choose the Perodua Aruz if you need 3-row, 7-seater space on a budget.
Meanwhile, we suggest looking at the Jaecoo J5 (pictured above) which is now having a special price of just RM102,000 before negotiations.
Then there is the Chery Tiggo Cross (pictured above) with its 1.5 Turbo engine at just RM80,800 which has a longer warranty and after sales package whilst providing slightly more space and features than the X50 and Ativa
