Driven by Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda’s commitment to building pure, enthusiast-focused performance cars, the upcoming MR2 is slated to anchor Gazoo Racing’s expanding lineup alongside high-performance icons like the GR Corolla, GR Supra, and the GR GT supercar.
In case you were wondering, the first produced in 1984, the (MR2) ‘Midship Runabout 2-Seater’ was named for its engine placement and seating layout and was Japan’s first mass-produced mid-engined car. Almost 334,000 units were sold worldwide over 23 years and with three generations and then it was retired without a hint of a 4th generation …….. until very recently.

Taking heavy design cues from the acclaimed FT-Se concept, the production-ready MR2 sports car combines aggressive aerodynamic styling with a compact, ultra-low profile. Aggressive side air scoops and a tapered roofline deliver optimized engine cooling and downforce.
Extensive use of high-strength, lightweight materials keeps the curb weight low for maximum agility. Vertical LED running lights and a sleek, wide rear diffuser set a modern visual tone.
Under the rear deck, Toyota’s Gazoo Racing division is engineering a game-changing powertrain.
It might be the G20E 2.0-Liter Turbocharged four-cylinder which was developed and tested through Japan’s Super Taikyu endurance series, this new engine is designed for high output and extreme efficiency. Road-going variants are targeted to reduce over 400 hp, making it one of the most powerful four-cylinder production engines ever built.
While early MR2 generations were famous for snappy rear-wheel-drive handling, the new model is expected to utilize a specialized AWD system for incredible cornering grip and stability without understeer.
Enthusiasts can expect a true six-speed manual gearbox, alongside an available performance automatic transmission.
