Perodua maintains lead in car sales in 1Q

Rawang 8 April: Perodua maintained it pole position in terms of car sales in the 1Q 2011 with 45,700 units and market share of 29% despite the challenging market conditions. Compared with the same period last year, sales fell 4.4% from the 47,800 units and market share of 32.4%. “Competition has heated up with new product offerings and promotions by other manufacturers,” Perodua Managing Director Datuk Aminar Rashid Salleh said.
“Despite the challenging market conditions, we recorded the best sales in March 2011 with close to 18,000 units driven by the strong demand for Myvi, ViVA and Alza,” he said. The Myvi continued to be the country’s top selling model with some 21,500 units sold in the first 3 months of the year of 2011 or 19% higher than the 18,000 units during the corresponding period in 2010.
“We are proud of the sustaining power of this model which was launched 6 years ago. This is testimony to the quality and value-for-money attributes of Myvi,” Aminar said. Perodua also sold some 15,900 units of the ViVA while the Alza was also the top seller in the multipurpose vehicle segment with 8,400 units during the first 3 months of 2011. Reviewing Perodua’s after sales operations, Aminar said Perodua also managed to increase its market share of service intake to 49% during the first quarter 2011 with 416,500 intake or 4% higher than the 45% market share and 400,800 intake during the same period in 2010. By revenue, sales of parts and accessories also improved by 31% during the quarter under review.
“Moving forward, the 2Q and 3Q will be challenging, as our operations are impacted by the earthquake and tsunami which hit Japan on 11 March 2011. We believe this situation is temporary and we will bounce back strongly,” Aminar said.
