Ford S-Max Ecoboost Enjoyed By The Family

Mention the name Ford and MPV in the same breath and only a handful of people will take note. This is because Ford has not had a MPV in this market for almost 20 years. The last time they sold a MPV in Malaysia it was the ‘Spectron’ which was a shared product with the Mazda Bongo. Now, under Sime Darby Auto Connexion, Ford has stormed into the lucrative luxury MPV segment with a class leading product from its British subsidiary. The S-Max has been a best seller in its native England since its 1st model launch and even across the English channel it has seen favorable sales. With a selling price of just RM180,000, this latest version of the S-Max comes with Ford’s all new Ecoboost engine which is shared in the Mondeo sedan.

Get inside the S-Max and you will see a well presented dashboard and Ford’s FordConvers+ software that includes voice command, Bluetooth and many other functions in front of you.

The instrument cluster presents a computer screen with all relevant information in a clear easy to digest view.

A SONY in car entertainment system provides very decent sound. A multifunction steering system has a nice firm feel and is weighted like a sports sedan. There are 3 individual seats in the middle row with good support and comfort and they all slide aft and back with ease.

The side seats fold forward easily to allow easy 3rd row access, even for adults. But 3rd row seating is better for teens and kids as average adults will find it tight for kneeroom. Still all other MPV’s in this class and price have the same space or less. 3rd row seats fold complete flat with a tug of lever and this follows with the middle row for a class best cargo volume.

The Ecoboost engine is quiet at idle and when worked produces a rather throaty growl that is not too noisy. Power delivery is very impressive with just 4 adults it drives with little effort on all road conditions. Fill it up with 7 passengers in all seats and surprisingly the S-Max performance with the 6-speed dual clutch gearbox does not reduce too much.

The added weight does pull the Ecoboost engine to its upper limit on the highway (snick it into ‘sports’ mode for added power) but it is no less than the average segment MPV. This S-Max however betters the segment rivals with good fuel efficiency which is its main selling point. Next is the high specification of safety features and creature comforts that come with the car. When compared to segment rivals like the Peugeot 5008 the S-Max stands ahead in more than a few areas. Add the strong warranty program and after sales service, the S-Max even clears the field of gray/used MPV’s like the Estima which leaves buyers without any warranty and service packages.
