Volkswagen Presents Technical Details of the Golf Mk7

Volkswagen has unveiled some details of the upcoming Golf 7. For now they are showing the platform and running gear only. This model is the first of up to 60 separate models that would be built on VW’s radical new MQB platform, which is the first in the industry that had been developed to have the ability to stretch to fit any size, from the Polo to a Passat.

The Golf 7 will be a lot lighter than its predecessor. It will have the similar weight to the MK4 Golf even with much more safety features included. Aside from being a very flexible structure, the MQB is also an integral part of a new production system that VW plants worldwide will adopt. This system enables the various vehicles to be assembled using the same production lines, with production equipment meant to fit cars of varying length, width and track.

This will allow VW, Seats, Skodas and Audis to be assembled on the same line. Shuffling production will enable VW facilities to operate at much higher capacities. The MQB platform also has a common engine mounting system wherein both petrol and diesel engines will be mounted in the same manner and at the same angle of inclination. This is a major step forward when it comes to the ease of production and assembly. For the MQB, there are two new modular petrol and diesel engine ranges, which include an 800cc diesel and a turbocharged 1.2-litre petrol unit. More details to follow soon.
