Mazda CX-5 SUV Gets Highest 5-Star Safety Rating From Euro NCAP
The Mazda CX-5 SUV has received the highest 5-star safety rating from Euro NCAP, officially certifying this Mazda to be one of the safest vehicles in the world. This crossover SUV was launched earlier this week in Malaysia with pending bookings of more than 800 units. From Euro NCAP it received top scores in all four safety categories. Specifically, vehicle’s score for adult occupant protection was 94% while its child occupant protection rating was 87%. For the safety assist systems score, the CX-5 received 86%. These ratings were well above thresholds of 80%, 75% and 60% necessary in each category to obtain the maximum five stars.
Mazda’s latest model was able to achieve the maximum safety rating even if it was being subject to the higher pedestrian protection standards set by Euro NCAP in 2012, a factor wherein automobiles must now hit at least a 60% mark. The CX-5 is the third Mazda model, next to Mazda3 and Mazda6, to attain five stars from Euro NCAP since the launch of its new rating system in 2009.
The scores per category will depend on various crash tests, such as a 64km/h (40mph) frontal collision, 29km/h (18mph) pole side impact, 40km/h (25mph) simulated pedestrian impact and 50km/h (31mph) vehicle-to-vehicle side impact.
Among other passive and active safety measures, Euro NCAP also assessed the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system of the CX-5. This is the equivalent of Mazda to electronic stability control (ESC). The CX-5 is a first in Mazda’s new-generation models. It is the first model to be equipped with the innovative new SKYACTIV body.
With the goal of developing the ideal vehicle body, the automaker’s engineers went back to the basics, rethinking the fundamental principles of materials, structure and manufacturing methods.
