Volvo To Update All 8 Models In 12 Months
Within the next 12 months, major updates will be given to 8 of Volvo’s 9-model range, according to new company boss Hakan Abrahamsson. He mentioned that after these updates, consumers will then get to see the all-new XC90 replacement, which starts selling in late 2014. The new XC90 would be the first model to use Volvo’s new ‘Scaleable Platform Architecture’, which will be used on all future models starting with the S60 upwards. This year, the current 60- and 70-series cars will receive external makeovers. Majority of Volvo’s models will be using the new engines. Volvo is offering this product blitz in response to the declining sales in 2012. Volvo sold 421,951 cars in 2012, which is 6% lower than in 2011.
Abrahamsson also mentioned that the decrease was nearly totally caused by the weakness of the European market, where Volvo retained its share, but in a deteriorating market. Abrahamsson said that Volvo is planning to do it alone in replacing the smaller S40 and V50 series models. Volvo is now expected to attempt and design a small platform itself, probably by sharing parts with its Chinese owner Geely, after having looked at attempting to find a partner to offer a small platform to replace the current Ford-derived architecture.
In addition, Abrahamsson said that Volvo won’t produce a car smaller than the current V40. But any new models are not likely to arrive before the second half of the decade. He said that Volvo continues to work on “better defining” its brand values to the car-buying public. This is because the SUV will be known as the ‘core’ Volvo model instead of the classic estate car. The XC60 was Volvo’s top-selling model last year, with sales of 106,203 units, a marked increase from 97,183 in 2011.
