To work, an engine needs two things: fuel, and air. But you need to get the amount just right; too much fuel or too much air and the engine will not run properly. Nowadays, most engines use electronic fuel injection, so a computer controls how much fuel and air goes into the engine.

But before electronic fuel injection, we had carburettors. Carburettors can still be found on some older cars, and they are a clever way of controlling how much fuel and air goes in, without the use of a computer. There are all kinds of carburettors, from basic ones that go on mass-produced engines, to carburettors designed for high performance and racing.

A basic carburettor provides fuel for the engine, but how much fuel is supplied will depend on the pressure of the air inside the carburettor. When the air is still, the pressure inside is high, which slows the fuel flow down. This happens when the throttle is closed, as there is very little air that can flow through the carburettor, so very little fuel goes into the engine.

As the throttle opens, more air goes into the engine. The moving air lowers the pressure inside the carburettor, which allows more fuel to flow into the engine. The accelerator is what controls the throttle, so as you step on the pedal more, the throttle opens more and more fuel goes into the engine.

Use PETRONAS PRIMAX 95 XTRA to get the best out of your carburettor powered car and you will be impressed with its ability to take you further with more kilometres on every fill-up.
