Volvo XC90 Luxury SUV Engine Details Revealed
The all new Volvo XC90 luxury SUV will make its world debut at the 2014 Paris Motor Show this September but the Swedish car company is beginning to reveal more details of its upcoming SUV. Volvo will offer a range of Drive-E engine options that promise to provide fuel-efficiency as well as performance. For those who don’t know, the Drive-E engine range consists of four-cylinder engines.
The top of the ‘Twin Engine’ range 2015 Volvo XC90 will carry the ‘T8’ badge and will be a plug-in electric car, hybrid car as well as a high-performance car rolled into one. This model will use a 2.0-liter four-cylinder supercharged and turbocharged Drive-E petrol engine that sends the power to the front wheels but also an electric motor delivering 80 hp (60 kW) to the rear wheels.
Volvo says that the supercharger will five the engine a naturally-aspirated feel, while the turbocharger kicks in when the airflow builds up. In addition, the electric motor will deliver immediate torque and will provide an all-electric range of up to 40 km or almost 25 miles.
This new XC90 will also come with a plug-in hybrid that will deliver a total output of around 400 hp and 640 Nm of torque, while CO2 emissions are around 60 g/km (NEDC driving cycle). Still, the 2015 Volvo XC90 will also be available with the D5 twin turbo diesel engine that generates 255 hp and 470 Nm of torque.
This engine promises a fuel consumption of around 6 l/100 km. A smaller D4 turbo diesel engine will be available with 190 hp and 400 Nm of torque, while fuel consumption will be around 5 l/100 km.
Volvo will offer two petrol engine options, a T6 turbo engine with supercharger and turbo that develops 320 hp and 400 Nm of torque. The second petrol engine, T5, delivers 254 hp and 350 Nm of torque.
“There are no compromises when you drive an all-new XC90,” said Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President Research and Development of Volvo Car Group. “In the past you could either have power or low CO2 emissions. But with the all-new XC90 you can have both.”
