GT86 Replacement To Use MX-5 Chassis?

Reports are coming in that suggest the Toyota-Mazda partnership might yield a sportier outcome than anticipated. Apparently, the second generation GT86 will be built on the latest Mazda MX-5.

It’s mostly rumours for now, but what’s confirmed is that Toyota has tested the ND-generation MX-5’s chassis and if they like it more than the one they’re already developing it will definitely be used in the next GT86. If that’s right, then it’s safe to assume all variants will be based on the same Mazda chassis, including the Subaru BRZ and the Scion FR-S.

Regardless of whether or not Toyota make this move, the replacement sports car will come in a smaller and lighter RWD package. There’s talk of a separate model that’s even smaller and more affordable, but until any official announcement, we’ll have to make do with the upcoming April 2016 facelift of the current car that will boost the power up by 11 PS, improve the suspension and look very different.
