Picture Of The Day BMW E28 M5 Super Sedan

Launched at the 1985 Amsterdam Motor Show the E28 M5 was the fastest production saloon car of its time. Lurking under the bonnet and disguised by its subtle looks was the mighty M88 engine, a modified unit from the BMW M1 and the same engine BMW used in the M6s of the era.

The straight 6-cylinder 3453cc engine produces 282bhp and is good for the 0-100km/h run in 6.1 seconds when all systems are working perfect and will hit a top speed of 150mpg easily.

Not to be confused with the similar looking but more modestly powered M535, this Motorsport classic boasts the legendary 24-valve 3.5 litre engine first seen in the rather more exotic mid-engine M1

A product demanded by those looking for the performance of a sports car but the practicality of a saloon car the E28 M5 was the first of many incarnations utilising this combination.

Handbuilt by a special team of BMWs finest technicians early models started life in BMWs original Preussenstrasse location near BMW AG headquarters in Munich until in late 1986 when production was moved to the newly opened BMW Motorsport headquarters in Garching.

Only 187 RHD M5s were produced from 3/86 to 11/87 so finding an original unit in Malaysia is not going to be easy and then getting the owner to part with it will be another issue.

Standard equipment from the factory at the time was, Tinted Glass, Rear Window Blind, Rear Seat Head Restraints, M-Tech Rear Spoiler, Air Conditioning, Electric Sunroof, Electric Front Seats, Headlight Wash-Wipe & classic looking BBS Wheels.

This is probably the rarest of all production BMWs ever. Just 187 examples of the first-generation M5 (E28) were hand-built in right-hand-drive form, and costing close to £36,000 in 1987 so the exclusivity of owning this car was assured.

In the eyes of our customers, the BMW 5 Series embodies the BMW brand like no other model. They appreciate that it encapsulates the best things about the brand and makes no compromises.

That is why it has been the highest-selling car in its segment year after year and that’s why more than 7.6 million customers and counting have placed their trust in a BMW 5 Series. Any new M5 model continues the family tradition of covering every base in terms of driving dynamics, comfort and functionality.
