Today in Automotive History – 4 September
Today in 1901, Mr. Jaguar was born! Who exactly is Mr. Jaguar? His real name is William Lyons – Sir William Lyons. Lyons was born in Blackpool and began work as a salesman at age 18.
By the time it was legal for him to go into business at age 21, he obtained a loan and formed a partnership with William Walmsley to create “Swallow Sidecars”.
The company began manufacturing low-cost cars. Soon after the Second World War, the company name was changed to “Jaguar”, and they’ve been building nothing but great vehicles ever since. And because Walmsley left the company by this time, Lyons got the nickname Mr. Jaguar all to himself.
