The World Touring Car Championship is not short of its own superstars, but none is bigger than Yvan Muller, WTCC’s most successful driver with more titles, wins, poles and fastest laps than any other driver.
However, he did lose out on his fifth title last year to Citroen team-mate, finishing 118 points behind the Argentinean.
This raised the question to the possibility of the Frenchman being relegated to a number two status. His answer was quick and solid, “Of course not. I am here first of all to help Citroën to win the title and honestly that’s not just to say something. That is my first goal and of course if I can win the [Drivers’] title I will try to win of course. I wouldn’t be here if I don’t think so.”
His search for another title is somewhat helped by a smaller Citroen team together with Lopez as the two drivers. Two other team-mates from 2015, Ma Qing Hua and Sebastien Loeb, is pursuing other racing interests.
Of course, one should not forget the threat posed by Rob Huff (Honda) and Gabriele Tarquini (Lada).
The WTCC 2016 season starts at Circuit Paul Ricard in France from 1-3 April.
