21.7L/100km diesel consumption. This is exactly the fuel consumption that the Volvo SuperTruck has achieved in the U.S. Combining an aerodynamic cab and trailer, aluminium chassis and powertrain technologies, the truck was recently put to the test and achieved a freight efficiency improvement of 88%, exceeding the 50% improvement goal set by the U.S. Department of Energy. It was found that the sleek prime-mover/trailer combination boosted fuel efficiency by 70%.

During testing the truck managed to return better than 13mpg (21.7L/100km), Volvo tell us the truck in its standard form averaged 7 mpg (40.4L/100km). A number of the technologies demonstrated in the Volvo SuperTruck are expected to be commercialized, in particular some of the engine advancements and aerodynamic improvements.
