Petrol Engine of the year – Ford 1.5 EcoBoost
We were looking for a fuel efficient petrol engine that delivered its power with buttery smoothness and still gave the driver the necessary power needed for daily driving. An engine that crossed the line between good power delivery and good fuel consumption whilst being low in its cubic capacity for a low yearly road tax fee.
The petrol engine that impressed us all was from Ford Motor Company and its new 1.5-litre EcoBoost petrol engine in its latest Ford Focus range. The 1.5-litre engine is a key strategic entry for Ford, as the company works to meet the strong global demand for its four-cylinder EcoBoost engines.
This 1.5-litre EcoBoost is the fifth member of the EcoBoost family and is a key contributor to Ford’s aggressive fuel economy and emissions strategy, EcoBoost technologies enable improvements to both fuel efficiency and CO2 emissions of up to 20%. The 1.5-litre engine benefits from signature EcoBoost turbocharging, direct fuel injection and variable valve timing and has been designed to be even more fuel-efficient and offer high levels of engine refinement, quietness and performance.
The new aluminium-block, twin-cam 1.5-litre EcoBoost engine features some of the innovative features introduced on the award-winning 1.0-litre EcoBoost, including an integrated exhaust manifold.
At the heart of this world’s most popular compact car is a powerful and efficient 1.5-liter four-cylinder EcoBoost engine, which offers 180 PS of power and 240 Nm of torque paired with a six-speed automatic transmission.
The 1.5-litre EcoBoost engine is the first engine from Ford to incorporate a computer-controlled clutch on the belt-drive water pump, which further improves efficiencies by reducing warm-up time. A water-cooled charge air cooler is added to offer a more efficient feed of air into the engine.
