Mercedes-Benz First Formula E Car Makes Track Debut

The Mercedes-Benz EQ Formula E hit a major milestone last week with the track debut of their all-electric vehicle, the Silver Arrow 01. With the race quickly closing, the team got their car on the track at Varano, Italy. Stoffel Vandoorne and Edoardo Mortara were the ones put behind the wheel.

About the Silver Arrow 01

The Silver Arrow 01 is the first all-electric race car of its kind from Mercedes-Benz.

It sports blue accents as well as a star pattern at the rear of the vehicle. On the side of the vehicle, running all the way from the front to the rear, is a horizontal blue line symbolising the EQ brand. At the same time, it serves as a colour contrast similar to the PETRONAS green on the Mercedes-AMG F1 W10 EQ Power+ in Formula 1. The lines help to optimise visual proportionality. At the rear of the vehicle there is a star motif for both the Formula 1 car and the Formula E teaser version. This subtly conveys the high-value Mercedes-Benz brand.

Toto Wolff (Head of MB Motorsport) says:

“When a new racing car comes to life for the first time and goes out onto the track, that’s always a very special moment. Not only have we reached an important milestone for our as yet young team, but we have also laid a solid foundation for further development. But there is still a lot of work to do before our race debut when the next season starts towards the end of this year.”

About the Driver

Edoardo Mortara was a member of the Mercedes-AMG Motorsport DTM squad in 2017 and 2018, and he still has links with the team. During the test drives at Varano, the Venturi driver stepped in for Gary Paffett who was in action at the Intercontinental GT Challenge at Laguna Seca.

The first day was set aside for a filming day with the new car, the regulations for which permit the team to complete a maximum of 50 kilometres. During the course of the three days, the new vehicle covered a total distance of 527 kilometres. The objective was to compile as much information and data as possible about the first version of the power unit and the rest of the drive assembly.
