Alfa Romeo 4C could be the best modern roadster we can’t buy
The Alfa Romeo 4C is sold around the world (but sadly not officially in Malaysia) as a coupe or a roadster and it is a car for purists, driving enthusiasts and real diehards only.
Thanks to its carbon fibre construction, it weighs just 1118 kg. Its mid-mounted engine, which is a turbocharged 1.7L four cylinder may seem small, but it produces 237 horsepower and 258 lb/ft of torque, allowing this compact and sexy Italian roadster to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in only 5.3 seconds.
The designers further increased the 4C’s performance by incorporating a Carbon Fiber Monocoque Chassis. It uses material stronger and lighter than steel which provides an enhanced power-to-weight ratio. The standard rear wheel drive creates excellent road grip and exceptional handling.
With no official brand owner/guardian in Malaysia, ownership comes from private used (AP) importers who charge a hefty price and with no warranty and after sales provided. Still some die hard enthusiasts in Malaysia have paid up to RM400,000 for a used 3-year old unit and today you can find on occasion a used registered unit for sale from RM330,000 upwards.
What is worrying is possible recalls or electrical issues (an Alfa Romeo common issue) that might corp up during ownership and this reduces the appeal of this Porsche Cayman/ Boxster rival. Still…one day in the future…when prices fall to below RM90k, we might be persuaded to own our very first Alfa Romeo.
