Selangor Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department head Superintendent Azman Shari’at said the incident occurred at approximately 3 pm on Tuesday.

Investigations revealed that the man, identified as Chew Teck Chan, was on his way to Shah Alam when he lost control of his vehicle and ploughed into the concrete barrier in the Smart Tag lane. Looking at the position of the yellow pole, it is believed that the lane was closed at the time of the incident.

The powerful impact of the collision left the 34-year-old driver pinned inside the car. According to reports, rescuers from the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) took 15 to 20 minutes to extricate the body using hydraulic cutter and spreader.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene by the paramedics from Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah (HTAR), Klang. His remains will be taken to Shah Alam for post-mortem following the result of a Covid-19 test.

Judging from the photos of the scene of the incident, the Honda City must have been travelling at relatively high speed when it hit the barrier. This resulted in a substantial damage to its front end and passenger cell, with almost half of the sedan badly crushed.

While the exact cause of this crash remains unclear, let this be a reminder that it is wise to pay utmost attention and slow down when you’re approaching a toll plaza.
