New Honda Civic Type R Being Tested Right Now

The all-new Honda Civic Type R hatchback is being tested at the Nürburgring.

The 11th generation Honda Civic is being rolled out globally, with its launch in Malaysia being anticipated by the end of 2021 or in early 2022. The vehicle is already available in Thailand. As most expect, Honda are working on a Type R version based on the hatchback body style. Now Honda have officially teased the vehicle wearing some red and black camouflage.

The 11th generation Honda Civic Type R is currently being tested at the Nürburgring to ensure they’ve got everything down. The last Type R become took the record for the fastest front-wheel-drive vehicle and held it for a while. We have little doubt that Honda will attempt to take that record once again.

While Honda Type R vehicles have always been front-wheel driven, some rumours are pointing towards this year being the year Honda tries something different with an all-wheel-drive system and possibly even a hybrid powertrain. The previous Civic Type R used a revised version of the K20 found on the Type R it replaced. So there is a chance that the powerplant is already at the limit of what engineers can do given the tightening emissions and fuel efficiency regulations. However, knowing Honda, they’d probably be reluctant to mess with the front-wheel drive, 2-litre layout they’ve established for the Civic Type R.

It has also been indicated that this Honda Civic Type R will be the last pure gasoline engine-powered vehicle from the brand to be sold in Europe. If this is true, then it can be confirmed that the Type R will indeed be a non-hybrid vehicle at least.

Another thing to consider is the closing of the Swindon factory in the UK. This was where the outgoing Civic Type R was built and building it there enabled Honda to sell the car in the United States for the first time ever. In this generation, we’re not sure if Honda will revert to selling just the Civic Si in the States or if they’ll find some new way of offering the Type R there.

The new Type R seems to feature more mature styling versus its predecessors. The wing, while large, is a little neater. The front grille features a honeycomb pattern not unlike the pattern found on the grille of the City RS sold in Malaysia.

Honda are still developing this performance machine, but you can expect it to be fully revealed and introduced to markets in 2022.
