Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid Launched In Malaysia From RM136,550
The Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid becomes the first hybrid to be produced at the Bukit Raja Plant by UMW Toyota Motor.
UMW Toyota Motor has launched the first ever Corolla Cross Hybrid in Malaysia inline with Toyota’s global initiative to achieve carbon-neutrality by 2050. The Corolla Cross Hybrid is locally-assembled at their new Bukit Raja Plant. The Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid is available for RM136,550 without insurance with the ongoing SST exemption on locally-assembled vehicles.
The Corolla Cross Hybrid is built on the Toyota New Global Architecture chassis and features a 4th Generation Toyota Hybrid System mating a 1.8L petrol engine with an electric motor. These different power sources give the Corolla Cross Hybrid the best of both worlds – quieter, more torquey performance with less fuel use and longer range.
The Atkinson-cycle 1.8L Dual VVT-i engine produces 98PS at 5,200rpm and 142Nm of torque at 3,600rpm while the electric motor has 72PS and 163Nm of torque on tap. A nickel-metal hydride battery supplies power to the motor and this drives the fuel consumption of the Corolla Cross Hybrid down to just 23.3km per litre.
At full throttle, the Corolla Cross Hybrid is said to be 6 dB quieter than the petrol variant and it’s 4-7dB quieter at a constant 60km/h cruise. It also boasts brisker acceleration times than the petrol variant, particularly up to 50km/h.
Also impressive is the fact that the boot’s luggage capacity is unaffected by the battery pack and remains the same as the petrol model’s 440L.
Equipment for the Corolla Cross Hybrid is top notch, with a 9″ touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, leather seats, a powered driver seat, rear air cond vents and some features that are not available on the petrol models.
These hybrid-exclusive features include dual-zone automatic climate control, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, a 7″ digital instrument cluster, and blue edging on the floor mats. A Qi wireless charging mat can be optioned in as well.
In terms of safety, this new hybrid model comes with the Toyota Safety Sense (TSS, including Pre-Collision System (PCS), Lane Departure Alert (LDA) with Steering Assist, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) with stop-and-go function, Lane Tracing Assist (LTA) and Automatic High Beam (AHB).
These systems use both a radar and a camera and are paired to other safety technologies, such as a Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) with Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), Tyre Pressure Warning System (TPWS), and seven SRS airbags to give drivers and passengers peace of mind while on the road. It also gets a Digital Video Recorder at the front as standard and at the rear optionally.
Toyota’s Vehicle Telematics System (VTS) also allows the owner to keep track of the vehicle’s position via GSM/GPS signals. VTS is free on the Corolla Cross Hybrid for the first three years of ownership.
In Malaysia, the Corolla Cross Hybrid comes with a 5-year/unlimited mileage factory warranty AND an 8-year/unlimited mileage warranty for the hybrid battery pack, inverter, and power management control unit. Customers can extend this hybrid system warranty by 2 additional years to a total of 10 years for RM2950.

“The launch of the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid Electric marks a new milestone for UMW Toyota Motor as our very first locally-assembled hybrid vehicle with the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform. We believe that its launch will also pave the way for the energy- efficient vehicle (EEV) manufacturing industry in Malaysia.
Mobile sustainability is the way forward with the global shift towards clean and renewable fuels, in addition to innovative smart vehicles.
Since the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid Electric was made available for bookings in October last year, we have received numerous orders. This shows that Malaysians are in support of green technology and environmental sustainability and we are positive that we can position EEVs as a mainstream in mobility in the near future,” said President of UMW Toyota Motor, Ravindran. K.
Deputy Chairman, Mr. Akio Takeyama added “As a leader in mobility, Toyota is continuously expanding the boundaries of technology and transforming the mobility ecosystem with exciting new age innovations to move people and enhance lifestyles.
