Chery and Nio Sign Deal To Collaborate On Battery Swapping

Chery is already successful, now its collaboration with Nio will propel it further

China’s Chery Automobile has just signed a battery swapping deal

with electric vehicle (EV) startup Nio that will see the pair work together on standards and technologies as well as network expansion and operation. With Chery already being wildly successful, it looks like 2024 will bring even more success for the brand.

This collaboration between Chery and Nio on battery swapping not only signifies a strategic partnership but also highlights the growing importance of standardization and technology development in the electric vehicle (EV) industry. Now we ask, will this technology be brought into Malaysia anytime soon?

Moreover, William Li, founder, chairman and CEO of Nio also said, “In recent years, Chery has made remarkable achievements in both domestic and international markets, and Chery’s new energy vehicle business is growing rapidly. Through this partnership, Chery and Nio will leverage their respective strengths to provide users with high-quality charging and battery swap services.”

The signing with JAC and Chery is the latest strategic cooperation between Nio’s battery swap business and its industry partners after Changan Automobile and Geely Holding, the company said. This also marks a new chapter for all the brands as Nio has been the dominant force in battery swapping in China thus far.

Nio also sees its battery swapping service as similar to a cloud service, and Li has mentioned several times that the service has reached a point where it can be opened up to partners. This way, not only do all brands involved share resources, but the potential for more profit is also now on the table for all parties.

On top of that, on 21 November 2023, Nio and Changan signed a battery swap business cooperation agreement, in which the two companies will collaborate on the construction and sharing of a battery swap network and the development of battery swap-enabled models. Now, with Chery also on board, expansion is imminent.

On 29 November 2023, Nio and Geely signed a strategic cooperation agreement that will jointly promote the development of swappable battery standards, the construction and sharing of battery swap networks, and the development of battery swap-enabled vehicles to further develop all these technologies globally.

So what do you guys think about this? With EVs suddenly becoming more popular here in Malaysia as well and Chery already holding a stake in the country’s automotive proverbial pie, will we see the brand bring this technology to our shores along with its new partner sometime soon? Not likely but perhaps in the distant future.
