Chery Omoda E5 Launched In Malaysia For RM146,800

The Chery Omoda E5 is the first electric vehicle of its class for the brand and ambitiously targets BYD.

Chery Malaysia today launched the all-new Omoda E5 – an electric vehicle based on the petrol-powered Omoda 5. The Omoda E5 was first shown less than a year ago in pre-production form at the Shanghai Auto Expo. By November of last year, a unit was already on Malaysian soil. It’s rare for any non-national brand to take our market this seriously but it looks like Chery Malaysia are certainly putting their money where their mouth is.

The Chery Omoda E5 is essentially the same vehicle as the Omoda 5 but with an electric powertrain, minor styling changes and some EV-specific features.

Electric Powertrain

Much like the BYD Atto 3, the Omoda E5 features a single 204PS electric motor at the front. On the Chery, the torque output is noticeably higher at 340Nm. Despite that advantage, it lags behind the Atto 3 in its 0-100km/h acceleration time – the Atto 3 does it in 7.3 seconds where the Omoda E5 takes 7.6 seconds.

It features a 61kWh lithium-iron phosphate battery that’s good for 430km of range. While it sounds like a lower number than what the Atto 3 can do, it should be note that the Chery is rated on the WLTP cycle, which is stricter than the NEDC cycle that BYD quotes.

Thanks to 80kW DC fast charging capabilities, the Omoda E5 can be juiced up from 30% to 80% in just 30 minutes plus 9.9kW AC charging puts it a little ahead of the BYD products in this particular category. The Omoda E5 can also perform vehicle-to-load functionality, allowing the vehicle to power certain appliances like a huge remote power bank. This EV also comes with a frunk and the charging is done through ports mounted in the nose of the vehicle.

Chery Malaysia equips the Omoda E5 with LED projector headlamps, 18″ aero-designed alloy wheels, a leather upholstery, and a powered sunroof. You can also expect a powered tailgate, dual-zone climate control, rear air cond vents, twin 12.3″ digital screens, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a 360-degree parking camera. Chery’s ADAS system includes automatic high beams, lead vehicle departure alert, front collision warning, autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning and prevention, lane keep assist, rear cross traffic alert, tyre pressure monitoring.

Excellent Value Package

The Chery Omoda E5 is being introduced with an excellent package. The first 2,000 buyers will get a free charging wallbox, a Vehicle-to-Load charger, and RM1,000 free charging credits with EVC. All Chery Omoda E5 customers can get as low as 2.08% interest rate for financing via Maybank, access to EVC’s new autocharging feature, and complimentary charging at all Chery outlets (there are 40 as of writing).

The vehicle comes with a 7-year/150,000km warranty, while the battery gets a 8-year/160,000km warranty. Chery Malaysia will give customers a one-to-one battery replacement should the state of health drop below 70%.
