Mugen Finds A Way To Improve The Honda Civic Type R

The latest Honda Civic Type R gets some cool enhancements from Mugen.

Let’s face it, Honda are the kings of front-wheel drive and they’ve proven it time and time again with the Civic Type R. The latest FL5 model was our pick for Hot Hatchback of the Year at last week’s VOTY 2024 awards. As perfect as it was, there’s still one company that can take a Honda and make it perform even better, and that company is Mugen. Last month, Mugen showed off Group A and Group B Civic Type R parts at the Tokyo Auto Salon and Osaka Auto Messe and now they’ve put Group A parts officially on sale while Group B parts are still being developed.

The parts still under development include the single tailpipe Sports Exhaust System, Sports Steering Wheel and new LED Taillights.

The Honda Civic Type R Mugen Group A aero part package was developed by Mugen in conjunction with Tomoki Nojiri, one of the fastest drivers in Japan. The five new parts give the Civic Type R FL5 25% more downforce compared to what comes from the factory. They’re aerodynamically optimised but also take on aesthetic concerns as well.

The most important functional part here is the Front Under Spoiler, which contributes out of the front of the car and gives the Type R A more solid presence and of course much of the package’s downforce gains. There’s also a Front Bumper Garnish for a more aggressive look. This is installed at the front of the air skirt. The Side Garnish and Rear Under Spoiler also create the race-ready look of the Mugen Civic Type R and are finished in glossy black.

A variable Rear Wing was designed with computational fluid dynamics analysis for extreme aerodynamics with minimal weight. This rear wing looks larger than it is with a outward angled end plate. All five aero parts are available in glossy black or unpainted. The rear wing is unpainted by default.

There are other parts to this package including diamond black painted “FR10″ 19” forged aluminium BBS wheels which are 10kg lighter than the ones that come from the factory. The Racing Nuts and Racing Lock Nuts are made of high-strength chrome molybdenum steel. Behind those wheels you’ll find the new Performance Dampers, which absorbs vibrations and improves ride quality and steering stability.

The cabin gets a bit of attention as well. Here you’ll find Recaro MS-C full bucket seats for driver and front passenger. These are low weight with mesh fabric upholstery and the Mugen logo embroidered in the headrests.

There’s also a Carbon Centre Console Panel and an Alcantara Shift Knob, though we personally prefer the aluminium knob in the standard Type R. Other optional accessories include MUGEN sports mats, luggage mats, a ventilated visor, hydrophilic LED mirrors, scuff plates and door inner protectors.
