Did You Know That Volvo Actually Started Out As I Roll?

See the interesting origins of Volvo before they became the brand we know today

In August 1926, Volvo embarked on a new chapter when the decision was made to start producing cars. This move came after Svenska Kullagerfabriken SKF, the company’s financial backer, reactivated an enterprise that had been dormant since 1920. The company in question was Volvo, originally established in 1915 with the primary goal of manufacturing and marketing bearings for the burgeoning automotive industry.

The choice of the name “Volvo” was not coincidental, it was a carefully considered decision by SKF management. They sought a name that was simple, easily pronounceable, and universally recognizable, minimising the chances of spelling errors in various languages. This practical approach was not only about branding but also about creating a name that resonated with the company’s mission and vision.

Moreover, the name “Volvo” holds significant symbolic meaning. Derived from the Latin verb “volvere,” which means “to roll,” it reflects the essence of movement, perfectly aligning with the automotive industry’s core function. In its first-person singular form, “volvere” becomes “Volvo,” translating to “I roll.”

This connection to rolling motion is a fitting metaphor for a company dedicated to producing vehicles, embodying both the literal and symbolic aspects of movement and progress. The Latin roots of the name also link to various words across languages that evoke the idea of rotation or rolling, such as “revolver.”

This etymological connection not only enhances the name’s memorability but also creates a narrative that reinforces the brand’s identity as a dynamic and forward-thinking automotive manufacturer. As Volvo transitioned from a manufacturer of bearings to a producer of cars, this foundational ethos was critical.

On top of that, the choice of a name that encapsulated the idea of rolling underscored the company’s ambition to drive innovation and quality in its vehicles. From its inception, Volvo has aimed to represent reliability, safety, and progress, values that continue to resonate with consumers today.

Thus, the reactivation of Volvo in 1926 marked the beginning of a significant journey for the brand, rooted in a name that symbolised movement and encapsulated the vision of its founders. This legacy has persisted through the decades, establishing Volvo as a respected name in the automotive world, synonymous with quality and performance.

The story of Volvo is not just about cars, it’s about a commitment to excellence, safety, and the continuous pursuit of advancement in mobility. So, did you know about I Roll before reading this?
