What is the right value for the 1st generation Proton X50 tomorrow
The joint venture deal between Proton and Geely was done back in 2018 and it outlined that 3 Geely-engineered vehicles would be sold as Protons in Malaysia. The first vehicle was the Geely Boyue, which you all know as the Proton X70 today.
The second model was the X50, which started life as the Geely Binyue (also known as the Coolray in the Philippines) and then we have the X90.
Unlike the Proton X70, the X50 was never fully imported from China. Instead, the Proton Tanjung Malim factory was renovated to accommodate local assembly from its launch, with the right-hand drive conversion being done with the help of Proton engineers. At its launch there were 4 variants presented with a wide price gap.

Four specifications launched in Malaysia were as follows:
X50 Standard – RM79,200
X50 Executive – RM84,800
X50 Premium – RM93,200
X50 Flagship – RM103,300
With a price gap from RM79k to 103k, the X50 sold very well these past years. While all variants have 1.5-litre 3-cylinder turbo petrol engine, the X50 Flagship’s engine is more modern and more powerful than the others (very similar to the Volvo XC40 petrol version).
The X50 offers a lot of features for its price, making it a popular choice, but be aware of potential maintenance costs after warranty has ended and the possibility of needing to replace parts like the alternator, starter, AC compressor, engine mounts and suspension in coming years.
Buying a used Proton X50
The Proton X50 offers a lot of features for its used price from RM65k today, making it a good value proposition, especially in the used market. It comes with a range of modern features, including a comfortable interior and advanced cabin technology.
Meanwhile, Proton has improved its after-sales service, and the X50 benefits from readily available parts and a large network of trained mechanics. The X50’s 1.5-liter turbocharged engine provides ample power for daily driving, and the car generally handles well and the latest version still carries its design DNA.
As with any car, maintenance costs can add up, especially after the warranty expires. Some owners have reported gearbox and engine mounting issues, which can be a potential concern and may require replacement. Check if the previous owner has done all the necessary changes under warranty claims.
Determine your budget for the car and factor in potential preventive maintenance and running costs.
What about the alternative?
If your budget allows, why not a new X50 comes with a full warranty with the latest cabin features and bookings are open now.
Other used Crossover’s to consider?
Well you could explore other Crossover’s in the same price range, such as the Perodua Ativa (from about RM45,000) and the early model Subaru XV (from RM49,000). These prices are before negotiations.

By the way, the 2020 facelift XV which was launched in 2020 for RM117,888 is now just RM70k upwards. This used price is before negotiations.
