BYD Orders Largest-Ever Recall: Over 115,000 Tang & Yuan Pro Models Affected

This BYD Recall of the Tang and Yuan Pro is the largest one yet by the company.

Chinese automaker BYD has filed a plan with the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) to initiate its largest vehicle recall to date, affecting more than 115,000 Tang series and Yuan Pro vehicles produced between 2015 and 2022. The action, announced on Friday, October 17, addresses safety risks related to design defects and battery-related manufacturing issues.

The recall covers two distinct model lines:

  1. Tang Series (Hybrid): A total of 44,535 Tang series vehicles produced between March 2015 and July 2017 are being recalled. The issue is linked to certain component design flaws which may cause abnormal function, leading to component damage and potentially disabling the pure electric drive mode.
  2. Yuan Pro (Electric Vehicle): The company is recalling 71,248 Yuan Pro electric vehicles manufactured between February 2021 and August 2022. This recall stems from manufacturing issues affecting battery installation, specifically the sealing gasket, which could compromise the power battery’s insulation if the vehicle drives through water at high speeds for extended periods.

A Pattern of Safety Recalls

This extensive recall is the latest in a series of safety-related actions taken by the automaker. Earlier this year, in January, BYD recalled 6,843 Fangchengbao Bao 5 plug-in hybrid off-road SUVs due to fire risks. Prior to that, in September 2024, the company recalled nearly 97,000 Dolphin and Yuan Plus EVs over a manufacturing fault involving a steering control unit that also posed risks of fire.

BYD has pledged to repair the affected vehicles free of charge. For the Tang series, the remedy involves a software update, while the Yuan Pro vehicles will receive a specialized sealant to reinforce the battery casing and restore its waterproofing function.

As BYD continues its rapid expansion to become a global electric vehicle powerhouse, these recalls involving core powertrain and battery components highlight the persistent challenge of maintaining consistent quality control amid high-volume production.
