BYD Dolphin G PHEV Is Going Global

The BYD Dolphin G is BYD’s first plug-in hybrid (PHEV) small hatchback designed specifically for the European market to serve as a combustion-engined counterpart to its electric city cars.

Unveiled by BYD Executive Vice President Stella Li at the Financial Times’ “Future of the Car” event in United Kingdom, the B-segment vehicle will make its official debut ahead of its UK launch at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

The Dolphin G features exclusive badging on the rear and continuing BYD’s Ocean Aesthetics design language and presenting a more sporty overall appearance.

Its side profile employs short front and rear overhangs combined with a long wheelbase to maximise interior space utilisation.

The front fascia incorporates design elements from the BYD Seal, including “E-shaped” daytime running lights. Inside, the Dolphin G embraces a minimalist design theme, equipped with a large floating central touchscreen and reportedly featuring a head-up display system.

Over the next three years, BYD will carry out localised design and development tailored to European consumers’ tastes and requirements, moving away from directly introducing China-spec models into the European market

Key Specifications Dolphin G features BYD’s advanced DM-i hybrid setup:

Powertrain: A 1.5-litre petrol engine paired with dual electric motors.

Battery: Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) Blade Battery pack.

Electric-Only Range: Up to 90 km.

Total Combined Range: Exceeds 1,000 km on a full tank and charge.

Dimensions: Stays strictly under 4.3 metres long to appeal to tight European city driving habits.

Market Strategy & European Focus

The vehicle represents a sharp strategic pivot for BYD, emphasising an “In Europe, for Europe” philosophy.

Furthermore, introducing a plug-in hybrid allows the manufacturer to bypass steep EU import tariffs that apply to pure battery electric vehicles (BEVs) sourced from China. Local production for the Euro-focused lineup is expected to kick off at BYD’s new factory in Szeged, Hungary. Announced in late 2023, the plant is BYD’s first passenger car factory in Europe and is strategically positioned to help the automaker bypass EU tariffs and localise its European supply chain.
