Will These Potential Tata Motors Hybrid SUVs Come To Malaysia?

Tata Motors has been quietly expanding their SUV line-up over the years and now it’s moving to fit these SUVs with hybrid powertrains.

India’s Tata Motors has quite a number of successful modern SUVs on the road including the Safari, Harrier, and Nexon. The current conflict in Iran has put pressure on diesel supply and pricing, and so Tata Motors is rumoured to have electrification plans for some of these SUVs, though nothing has been confirmed yet. The timing is also pretty good for Malaysians as new brands have shown that if pricing and spec is right, many are willing to try something different.

So, what are the candidates for electrification under Tata’s umbrella?

Harrier and Safari

Unlike mild hybrids, these strong hybrids allow for pure electric driving over short distances and significantly higher fuel efficiency—a feature that would likely resonate with Malaysian drivers looking for “green” mobility without the range anxiety of a full BEV.

This move is seen as a way to balance performance and efficiency while Tata continues to expand its pure electric “Acti.ev” platform.

  • Design: Both feature a sophisticated “Impact 2.0” design language, with the Safari offering 6- and 7-seat configurations.
  • Performance: Expected to pair their robust 2.0L diesel or 1.5L turbo-petrol engines with strong hybrid technology.
  • Tech: Both are currently equipped with Level 2 ADAS, panoramic sunroofs, and high-end JBL audio systems.

Tata Nexon (EV & Hybrid)

The Nexon has been a best-seller for Tata. Its compact size makes it perfect for urban Malaysian commutes. A strong hybrid or plug-in hybrid variant could offer the fuel economy of a compact sedan with the high ground clearance (208mm) of an SUV.

Tata Sierra & Avinya (The Future)

The Sierra EV, inspired by a legendary nameplate, is expected to debut globally in May 2026. Looking further ahead, the Avinya brand represents Tata’s luxury EV aspirations, utilizing technology shared with Jaguar Land Rover.

Is Now The Time For Tata?

The timing for a Tata return seems ideal. With the Malaysian government pushing for higher EV and NEV adoption under the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), Tata’s future portfolio of ICE, hybrid, and electric vehicles allows them to cover multiple price segments and they perhaps will have a decent chance at success.
