Stop the daily Federal Highway roadblocks please and drivers who are subjected to this heavy traffic daily should voice out their unhappiness
Weekday traffic jams on the Federal Highway near the Cycle & Carriage Mercedes-Benz showroom in Petaling Jaya (Jalan 51A/219) are a daily struggle for thousands of commuters traveling between Petaling Jaya, Shah Alam, and Kuala Lumpur.
Why target car drivers and NOT motorcycle offenders?
Why target vehicle drivers on Federal Highway only ….. Kampung Medan is just 3 kilometres away and with daily offenders on 2 wheels! The same bike offenders can be seen every single day in Taman Koperasi Gombak and Kampung Kerinchi. (see shared images below from our readers who are concerned about possible accidents and even deaths)
A major bottleneck in this stretch stems from routine police operations and roadblocks creating severe gridlock (from about 10am onwards).
As you drive slowly past the Mercedes car showroom (just before the overhead ramp) you will see a police officer on the left standing behind light pillar with a walkie in hand looking for drivers on the smartphones or other clear offences like ‘not using their seatbelts’ and a few meters in front, the road block stops offenders and summons are issued.
The same situation happens in the opposite direction, a little further up at the ‘cable bridge’ to Sunway and Kelana Jaya.
We use this highway almost every other day for work as most of our clients are in Shah Alam and Ara Damansara.
If we happen to be on the highway before 9.45am ….. then its is work rush hour traffic that creates the traffic jam (drivers using the left lane to Sunway and Kelana Jaya via the cable bridge.
If we are on the highway before 10.20 am or so …… which means the ‘sweet spot’ timing is from 9.50am to 10.15am you have an open highway all the way.
The PDRM already knows that Federal Highway carries up to four or five lanes of heavy commuter traffic daily. When police set up checkpoints, multiple lanes are funneled down into one or two inspection lanes. This sudden reduction creates a bottleneck that cascades back for kilometers toward Subang and Shah Alam.
Located right at Section 51A, the area directly opposite the Cycle & Carriage showroom heading to Subang Jaya acts as a major interchange connecting Petaling Jaya inner roads, NPE, and LDP feeders to the Federal Highway. Vehicles merging from side roads into restricted main lanes multiply the congestion.
Even when vehicles are cleared quickly, drivers slow down significantly while approaching police personnel, flashing light bars, and traffic cones, causing a persistent ripple effect.
Commuters routinely lose 20 to 30 minutes stuck in gridlock over a stretch that normally takes under five minutes to cross.
Engine idling during bumper-to-bumper delays increases daily fuel consumption and fleet operation costs for commercial transport.
Yes, there are alternative routes via the New Pantai Expressway (NPE) or Sprint Expressway to bypass the Section 51A Federal Highway stretch when heading toward KL or Bangsar.
You can also monitor real-time traffic updates using Waze or Google Maps before entering the Federal Highway.
Question to PDRM? Why don’t you do the same roadblock in Kampung Medan off Old Klang Road where you have hundreds of motorcyclists daily without helmets, no license, no road tax even and even worse, many below the legal age riding and even taking pillion?
