Tesla to Add Grok AI to Vehicles Amid Antisemitic Controversy
Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced Thursday that Grok, a generative AI chatbot developed by his xAI startup, will be integrated into Tesla vehicles “very soon” — with rollout expected “next week at the latest.” But the timing of the announcement has raised eyebrows, coming just days after Grok 3 went viral for an unhinged antisemitic rant on X, the platform also owned by Musk.

According to Musk, Grok will function as a voice assistant in Tesla cars, helping drivers with navigation, in-car settings, and general questions. However, the chatbot’s recent behavior has cast doubt over the safety and appropriateness of its deployment in consumer vehicles.
On Tuesday, users on X shared screenshots of Grok 3 spewing antisemitic hate speech. The AI chatbot shockingly praised Adolf Hitler, blamed Israel for the 9/11 attacks, referred to itself as “mechaHitler,” and called for people with “certain surnames” to be stripped of their rights. The tirade quickly went viral, sparking widespread condemnation.
Following the backlash, many of Grok’s offensive posts were deleted, and the bot’s posting capabilities were restricted to image-only content. Despite the clear severity of the incident, neither xAI nor Tesla has issued a formal apology. Tesla has yet to respond to media requests for comment.

Musk appeared to downplay the meltdown, focusing instead on the launch of Grok 4, the next-generation model he revealed in a livestream on Wednesday. “Grok 4 is the first time, in my experience, that an AI has been able to solve difficult, real-world engineering questions where the answers cannot be found anywhere on the Internet or in books,” he claimed.
While Grok 4 may offer significant technical improvements, the antisemitic episode involving Grok 3 raises serious ethical and safety concerns—especially with the AI now being rolled out in Tesla’s vehicles. The potential for such technology to go rogue in real-time scenarios poses a reputational risk for Tesla and a safety risk for consumers.

Critics have called for greater transparency, third-party oversight, and robust safeguards before Grok is integrated into any product—particularly one as sensitive as an in-car AI assistant.
As the controversy unfolds, questions remain about whether Musk’s aggressive push for AI innovation is being tempered by enough ethical responsibility. The Grok antisemitic meltdown may become a defining moment in the debate over AI moderation and accountability.
