MBPJ Claims That There Will Be 1,000 EV Chargers Installed

The Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) is targeting the installation of 1,000 electric vehicle or EV chargers at strategic locations and public parking areas across the city, to be implemented in phases.

However, they did not say by WHEN! This could be in 10 years time ….. or 8 years time ……. or 2 years time. Plus, we ask why many older EV charging points are NOT repaired or replaced?

This is a common statement used by many when making press statements about EV charging.

Remember when Maari and PEKEMA said that they will have 400 EV charging stations ready by the end of 2025?

Meanwhile, there was the government’s ambitious  target, announced by Malaysian Green Technology Corp (MGTC) in late 2020 to have 10,000 public charging stations (separate from home EV charging) by the end of 2025.

However, the reality on the ground, where as of the first quarter of this year, only 2,214 EV charging stations have been installed, based on Ministry of International Trade and Industry data, which tells a very different story.

Meanwhile, Petaling Jaya Mayor Mohamad Zahri Samingon said the initiative will be carried out in two phases through collaborations with green energy solution providers, in support of the city’s low-carbon urban development agenda.

Did you know that Penang (on 13th March 2025 announced) is accelerating its transition towards electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure by setting an ambitious target of installing 600 electric vehicle charging bays (EVCBs) by the end of 2025.

The initiative, which aligns with the Federal Government’s goal of said to be deploying 10,000 EVCBs nationwide by 2025, where we will see 300 EVCBs installed on Penang Island and another 300 in Seberang Perai.

Mayor Mohamad Zahri Samingon added, “first phase will involve the installation of 500 EV chargers, to be implemented by two appointed strategic partner”, MBPJ is deploying modern charging technology that meets safety standards, is user-friendly, and highly efficient which is in line with the growing number of EV owners in the Klang Valley,” he added in a statement.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing ceremony between MBPJ and two companies was held at MBPJ Headquarters on 26 June 2025.

“Petaling Jaya is a key urban hub, and we are proud to work with MBPJ in bringing accessible and reliable EV charging facilities to the community,” said Ir. Lee Yuen How. “This partnership reinforces our shared vision for a greener and more connected future— and contributes meaningfully to Malaysia’s larger electrification agenda.”

Zahri added that the initiative aligns with national aspirations to accelerate low-carbon mobility and promote green urban transformation.

“MBPJ is committed to expanding access to this infrastructure throughout Petaling Jaya so that its benefits can be widely enjoyed by all local residents.”

“We hope this effort will further solidify Petaling Jaya’s position as a leader in green mobility, both locally and nationally,” he said.
