Volvo EX90 Gets Major Update To 800V System And AI Upgrades

The Volvo EX90 may have just been launched in Malaysia but there’s already a new version out.

Volvo Cars has officially opened the order books for the 2026 Volvo EX90, now upgraded with faster charging, enhanced computing power, and advanced safety features. These updates represent one of the most significant leaps forward for Volvo’s flagship electric SUV. It’s a little unfortunate that just 6 months ago, Volvo Car Malaysia started to sell the EX90 here in its original 400V form. In the fast moving age of EVs, this is one of the major drawbacks of buying new, you may just miss out on a significant upgrade if you adopt early. On the plus side, SOME of the upgrades will come to existing owners for free, just not the ones that are hardware related. Anyway, let’s have a look at what’s new on the updated EX90.

New 800V System for Faster Charging

The highlight of the 2026 EX90 is the move to a new 800-volt electric system, replacing the previous 400V architecture. The higher voltage enables faster charging with reduced heat generation, while Volvo’s in-house battery management software further optimises performance.

With these advancements, the EX90 can now add up to 250 km of driving range in just 10 minutes, making long-distance journeys more convenient. The new system also boosts efficiency, reduces material use, and delivers more power for improved acceleration.

AI-Driven Safety and Driver Support

The 2026 EX90 is equipped with a dual NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Orin-based core computer delivering 500 TOPS (trillion operations per second) of computing power. This allows Volvo to leverage AI, data, and software for advanced safety and performance updates.

New safety features include:

  • Connected safety alerts for slippery roads, hazards, and accidents ahead.
  • Emergency Stop Assist (ESA) with integrated automatic e-call. If the driver fails to respond due to sudden illness or inattention, the car will stop safely in its lane and automatically connect to an emergency call centre.
  • Expanded automatic emergency steering in darkness.
  • Park Pilot Assist for parallel parking convenience.

Owners of the 2025 Volvo EX90 are not left behind—Volvo will provide a one-time free core computer upgrade via scheduled workshop visits, ensuring existing customers enjoy the same benefits.

Luxury Enhancements

The 2026 EX90 also gains an electrochromic panoramic roof, first seen on the Volvo ES90. With the touch of a button, occupants can adjust transparency levels to reduce glare, increase privacy, or brighten the cabin.
