Lamborghini Cancels EV Plans, Pivots To PHEVs Only

The Italian supercar manufacturer Lamborghini has officially pivoted its long-term roadmap.

Lamborghini is recalibrating its future, moving away from a purely electric vision to embrace a more flexible hybrid approach. The brand had originally teased the Lanzador concept in 2023 with a target release of 2029, but shifting market realities and feedback from its core clientele have led to a significant change in direction.

Company leadership has observed that the appetite for battery-electric supercars among traditional enthusiasts is remarkably low. While the industry at large continues to push toward electrification, the specific emotional requirements of the high-performance segment—most notably the distinctive auditory experience of an engine—remain a barrier for full EVs.

Rather than pursuing what could be described as an “expensive hobby,” the manufacturer is focusing on financial responsibility and customer alignment. The goal is to ensure that every investment serves the desires of the driver while maintaining the brand’s legendary performance standards.

The Hybrid Success Story

This pivot is backed by strong commercial evidence. The brand achieved a historic delivery record in 2025, a feat credited largely to the successful integration of hybrid systems across its portfolio. Currently, the flagship Revuelto, the newly electrified Urus SUV, and the Temerario ensure that every model in the stable offers a hybrid variant.

By the turn of the decade, the entire catalog is expected to consist exclusively of plug-in hybrids. This strategy allows the company to retain internal combustion engines for as long as regulatory environments permit, satisfying those who view the mechanical soul of a car as its primary appeal.

Best of Both Worlds

The decision to focus on plug-in hybrid technology (PHEV) is seen as the ideal middle ground for modern supercars. This configuration provides the instant torque and low-end responsiveness characteristic of electric motors while preserving the high-end power and emotional resonance of a combustion engine.

As the automotive landscape continues to evolve, this refined strategy ensures that the brand remains at the pinnacle of performance without losing the character that has defined its identity for decades.
