FAW-Volkswagen has teased the ID. Aura T6, a mid-size electric crossover with Xpeng tech.
The Volkswagen ID. Aura T6 represents a significant shift in the brand’s electric vehicle strategy in China, utilizing a new VW-Xpeng electronic architecture and advanced sensor suites to compete in the premium crossover segment.

Platform and Electronic Architecture
The ID. Aura T6 is built upon the CEA (China Electronic Architecture), a system developed jointly by Volkswagen and Xpeng. This architecture is designed to streamline vehicle operations and enhance digital capabilities:
- ECU Reduction: The CEA reportedly reduces the total number of electronic control units by 30%.
- Connectivity: The platform supports over-the-air (OTA) update capabilities.
- Intelligence: It is engineered to host AI-based cockpit systems and China-specific assisted driving functions.

Dimensions and Exterior Specifications
While official dimensions will be fully disclosed at the Beijing Auto Show, initial data places the ID. Aura T6 in the mid-size crossover category.
- Length: The vehicle’s body length is estimated to be approximately five meters.
- Body Style: The design is a hybrid silhouette combining SUV and MPV characteristics, featuring short overhangs, slanted A-pillars, and a short bonnet line.
- Aerodynamics: It utilizes semi-hidden door handles and a curved roofline to optimize the drag coefficient.
- Lighting: The crossover is equipped with illuminated badges at both the front and rear, along with split headlights.

Interior Layout and Utility
The ID. Aura T6 is positioned as a family-oriented urban vehicle.
- Seating: The cabin is expected to offer three rows of seats in a 2+2+2 layout.
- Utility Features: Standard equipment includes conventional side-view mirrors and integrated roof racks.
This model marks a milestone as the first Volkswagen electric crossover to be equipped with a LiDAR sensor, which is positioned on the roof.
- Sensor Suite: The vehicle utilizes an ADAS system developed by Carizon, a joint venture between the Volkswagen Group and Horizon Robotics.
- Hardware: The combination of LiDAR and the CEA architecture facilitates high-level automated driving assistance specifically tuned for the Chinese infrastructure.
The ID. Aura T6 will be displayed alongside other models in the series, such as the ID. Era 9X and the ID. Unyx 08, as part of FAW-Volkswagen’s expanding electric portfolio. The only question is whether Volkswagen will think about exporting this new vehicle outside of China. Perhaps the name ‘China Electronic Architecture’ indicates domestic sales only.
