Xiaomi Sky Nomad EREV Shows The Tech Company Isn’t All In On EVs

Xiaomi diversifies away from pure battery electric vehicles with the Sky Nomad EREV.

Xiaomi is officially pivoting beyond pure-electric vehicles (BEVs) with the introduction of Sky Nomad, a new extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) product series. Designed to compete in the high-growth SUV segment, this move signifies a major strategic shift for the tech-turned-automotive giant as it looks to diversify its lineup beyond the existing SU7 and YU7 models.Introducing the Kunlun Architecture and the N90The first vehicle to debut under the Sky Nomad banner is the Kunlun N3, set for a 2027 launch as the N90. Built on Xiaomi’s all-new Kunlun architecture, this full-size SUV marks the company’s entrance into the EREV market—a segment where a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine acts as a generator for the battery, rather than powering the wheels directly.

Performance and Range Specs

Xiaomi is targeting impressive efficiency with the N90:

  • Battery & Range: A ~70 kWh battery pack provides 400–500 km of pure-electric range, with a total combined range exceeding 1,500 km.
  • Dimensions: Measuring over 5.3 metres in length with a 3.1-metre wheelbase, the vehicle is designed for comfort and utility.

Innovative Modular DesignThe Sky Nomad series is being positioned as a “lifestyle” vehicle. Xiaomi has packed the N90 with unique interior features that transform the vehicle into a multifunctional space:

  • Flexible Cabin: Rotating front seats and a sliding centre console that converts into a bar counter.
  • Versatile Use: The cabin is designed to become a studio, café, meeting room, or family playground when parked.
  • Outdoor Focus: With five- and seven-seat layouts, the N90 includes features like a built-in rooftop tent, capitalizing on the rising popularity of outdoor camping in China.

Market Positioning and Competition

With an expected starting price of around CN¥200,000 (US$29,400), the N90 is strategically positioned beneath key rivals like the Li Auto L9 and the Huawei-backed Aito M9. By entering this space, Xiaomi is challenging the leaders of the 2025 EREV SUV market, aiming to capture a segment of consumers that differs from the performance-focused SU7/YU7 fan base.

A Potential European Strategy

While the domestic launch is the primary focus, the Sky Nomad series could serve as a crucial component of Xiaomi’s global expansion.

  • Regulatory Advantage: EREVs and PHEVs currently sit outside the scope of certain EU countervailing tariffs that target pure BEVs.
  • European Reception: With European sales of PHEVs rising 33% year-over-year in Q1 2026, the Sky Nomad platform offers a “partially-electrified” bridge that aligns with current consumer trends and regulatory realities in Europe.

As Xiaomi works to establish its identity as both a maker of driver-focused BEVs and family-oriented EREVs, the N90 represents a critical test. Will the brand be able to generate the volume needed to dominate an already crowded SUV landscape? All eyes are on the Sky Nomad’s rollout in the coming months.
