Used car 1988 AUDI 100 CD review

Audi’s third-generation 100 luxury sedan entered the Malaysian market under the then guardian of the brand, Auto Dunia with limited success. It was supposed to challenge Mercedes and BMW’s technical and luxury motoring leadership in the luxury car sector for the first time but local buyer confidence in the Audi brand was low and so sales was also low. Innovations included stunning aerodynamics, flush glazing and lower weight.

Vorsprung durch Technik and some years later, Audi today is gaining quick ground with exciting and well built new models and Benz and BMW are a little worried. This somewhat hidden treasure has only little value in the used car market today with its 5-cylinder engines. The 1988 Audi 100 CD 2.0-litre model was sold here in Malaysia by Auto Dunia and at the time it sat in the luxury car segment where only potential BMW and Benz drivers were the target audience. The 100CD came with strong performance, good equipment levels and excellent economy. The entire car received a galvanised body so rust is not a issue and a comprehensive anti-perforation warranty. Another three years on saw a mild facelift that saw new bumpers, less chrome, new door handles and revisions to the engines and equipment levels. These cars survived until May 1991 when a car of the same name, the fourth generation 100, was introduced. This was offered initially in with 2.0 and 2.8-litre petrol-power. The 100 was facelifted and re-named the A6 in 1994. A car that still looks modern, handles and holds the road very well, is unlikely to rust, has loads of room and is very economical for such a big spacious sedan. Equipment is not overly-generous, though many cars will be full of options such as air-conditioning, a sunroof and central locking. Mechanically, these cars are well-proven as well as very reliable and strong. The five-cylinder engines are not particularly smooth running but they were known for this trait even from new. RM10,000 will buy you a well looked after unit with plenty of drive years left in it and a tired worn car will be in the region of RM2 to RM5,000.
