Volkswagen To Launch Polo Based SUV in 2014

Volkswagen was rumored at one point to be working on two distinct compact SUVs: one based on the Polo hatchback, while the other would be underpinned by the much smaller Up! city car. The former would be squarely aimed at compact crossovers such as the excellent Nissan Juke, Mazda CX-5 or the Mitsubishi ASX / Outlander Sport. We would imagine the VW Tiguan should be able to fill this gap, but VW wanst to put out another product to keep their product line-up tight. The Polo-based SUV will be underpinned by VW’s MQB platform, which is very easily adaptable for various uses, as VW plans to use it on a very wide range of upcoming cars. It will also share a lot of bits with the upcoming 2014 VW Polo and it will be offered with front-wheel drive as standard, while all-wheel drive would be offered as an optional extra, on the more powerful turbocharged versions. Volkswagen has proved with the Tiguan and the Q3 that they can make an excellent small crossover, but this even smaller one will be a challenge for them, as it will enter a market sector where all its rivals are very talented and appreciated. No official launch date has been announced, but since this is a clear gap in their otherwise airtight range, they need to get launch it soon.
