BMW Group Malaysia introduces the all-new BMW 4 Series Coupé.
BMW has launched the all-new BMW 4 Series Coupé in two variants, a BMW 428i Coupé and a BMW 435i Coupé. Setting the all-new BMW 4 Series Coupé apart as the only car with an 8-speed sport automatic transmission in its segment are its stylistic features that carry the promise of a powerful presence on the road, stand-out dynamic ability and driving pleasure in abundance. The “4” in its title headlines this new era for the Coupé and emphasises not only its stand-alone design, but also an even greater technical differentiation with additional driver-oriented features and functionality. The more distinctive, wide and muscular road presence with visibly larger width and wheelbase, and dynamically stretched coupé silhouette that sits considerably lower on the road will also deliver an increase in output and efficiency.
Design: A distinctive, wide and muscular road presence.
The BMW 4 Series Coupé makes an impression at first glance by embodying superior aesthetics, power, sporting appeal and presence. The new sporty and elegant compact executive coupé emphasises a paragon of balanced proportions with its deliberately sporting features and functions, expressive looks, individual character and enhanced engineering content.
With a silhouette which appears even lower and more elongated than the previous generation BMW 3 Series Coupé , the all-new BMW 4 Series Coupé is visibly sportier with a length of 4,638mm (increased by 26mm), width of 1,825mm (increased by 43mm), height of 1,362mm (reduced by 16mm), and a wheelbase of 2,810mm (increased by 50mm). Its rear track has also been extended by 80mm and front track by 45mm on top of its muscular, flared wheel arches which serves to accentuate the all-new coupé’s rear-wheel drive concept. This appearance is the first time a BMW has had the widest area of its body near the rear-axle.
Further highlighting the impeccable visual balance of the all-new BMW 4 Series Coupé are the BMW-typical short overhangs, long bonnet and a cabin that is offset towards the rear. Compared to its predecessor, the design of the all-new BMW 4 Series Coupé is much more geared towards suggesting power. In addition to the classic BMW proportions, the silhouette of the all-new coupé is dominated by the low, flowing and elegant roofline and conspicuously low windows inside frameless doors to create immense sporting elegance – one of the defining characteristics of a coupé – hinting at the car’s exceptional driving characteristics even when parked.
Nevertheless, the more sporting interpretation of the all-new BMW 4 Series Coupé also underlines its dynamic convictions. New elements of the all-new coupé are the Air Breathers, positioned rearwards of the front wheel arches. These are combined with the Air Curtains to reduce drag considerably around the wheel arches, and provide further visual clues as to the aerodynamic refinement of the all-new BMW 4 Series Coupé.
The BMW 428i Coupé comes with the Sport Line as standard, with an optional M Sport package as an upgrade for drivers who wants to bring BMW’s unique motorsport expertise and knowledge to the street. The BMW 428i Coupé Sport Line also features 18” Double-spoke light-alloy wheels with M Sport suspension and black high-gloss mirror caps. The BMW 435i Coupé on the other hand, is available with the M Sport package as standard featuring 19” BMW M Double-spoke light-alloy wheels, and an adaptive M suspension, electrical glass roof, and a comfort access system.
Further new touches to the design features of the car includes L-shaped taillights and rear lights that continue the sweep of the shoulder line on the sides of the car to create a harmonious transition into the rear. The all-new BMW 4 Series Coupé also comes with the hallmark Hofmeister kink at the bottom of the C-pillar, and a standard B-pillar in high-gloss black.
BMW EfficientDynamics: Superior dynamism and excellent fuel efficiency.
At the heart of the all-new BMW 4 Series Coupé is the multi-award winning BMW TwinPower Turbo technology which teams up with an eight-speed sport automatic transmission with paddle shifters as standard, as well as additional BMW EfficientDynamics features such as the new sailing function and Route-Ahead Assistant to further drive the all-new coupé towards achieving exceptional acceleration and significantly reduce fuel consumption and emissions.
The BMW 428i Coupé houses a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and delivers a maximum output of 180 kW / 245 hp with torque peaking at 350 Nm; enabling the BMW 428i Coupé to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in a mere 5.8 seconds at a top speed of 250 km/h. Despite the impressive acceleration, average fuel economy in the EU test cycle stands at a notable 6.4 litres per 100 kilometres and C02 emissions are just 149 grams per kilometre.
The BMW 435i Coupé meanwhile, boasts 225 kW / 306 hp from a 3.0-litre six-cylinder in-line petrol engine, with a peak torque of 400 Nm. The engine achieves acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.1 seconds with a top speed of 250 km/h, and records fuel savings at 7.4 litres per 100 kilometres with C02 emissions of a mere 172 grams per kilometre.
The all-new BMW 4 Series Coupé also offers drivers the ability to modify the overall character of the vehicle for an exceptionally fuel-efficient style of driving by switching to the ECO PRO mode with the Driving Experience Control button featured as standard. Reaffirming BMW’s key qualities as leaders in innovation, the unique ECO PRO mode now features the new sailing function which will disengage the engine from the drivetrain at speeds between 50 and 160 km/h when the driver takes the foot off the accelerator pedal, thus allowing the car to save on fuel consumption while coasting.
Another new function in the all-new compact executive coupé that joins forces with the Navigation System Professional is the Route-Ahead Assistant. Using data from the navigation system, it recognises bends, city, town and village boundaries, as well as speed restrictions along the route to provide drivers with tips on reducing the throttle in advance. In addition to blending the all-new BMW 4 Series Coupé’s enviable power output with efficiency, the ECO PRO route also allows drivers to save an additional five per cent of fuel, depending on their individual style of driving.
The all-new BMW 4 Series Coupé’s dynamic ability, precision and control is achieved by taking the typical BMW rear-wheel drive, ideal 50:50 weight distribution, and innovative lightweight design to a whole new level. The widened track combines driving stability with supreme agility and steering precision, while the lowered centre of gravity to a point below 500mm offers superlative road holding and particularly agile handling.
Further enhancing the all-new BMW 4 Series Coupé’s outstanding handling with maximized directional control and stability, the electromechanical steering with Servotronic function is included as standard to adjust power steering support in line with the car’s road speed. Exceptional steering precision and control is further achieved with the variable sport steering set to adjust the front wheels’ steering angle in line with the driving situation, thus allowing the all-new coupé to respond more or less directly to movements of the steering wheel.
To further demonstrate the exceptional sporty handling behaviour of the all-new BMW 4 Series Coupé, drivers with unique sporting ambition are offered the M Sport suspension with stiffer spring, damper and stabiliser tuning as standard on the BMW 428i Coupé. Meanwhile, the Adaptive M Suspension with electronically controlled dampers will be available as standard on the BMW 435i Coupé, and as a part of the M Sport package for the BMW 428i Coupé. In addition, M Sport brakes, which are fitted as standard on the BMW 435i Coupé, will make for even more sporting ability by using fixed aluminium callipers with four pistons at the front, and two at the back to minimise stopping distances.
Interior: Elegant, sporting appeal and superior functionality.
The interior of the all-new BMW 4 Series Coupé presents a stylish fusion of sporting allure and exclusivity. Beyond the ergonomic cockpit design of the all-new BMW 4 Series Coupé are highly contoured seats with integrated headrests at the back, making the rear seats appear like individual seats to further demonstrate the car’s sporting credentials. Coupled with an electric seatbelt handover, drivers and passengers are able to experience enhanced comfort when buckling up. Additionally, electric tailgate operation is featured as standard for the all-new BMW 4 Series Coupé to allow comfortable luggage compartment access with an increased volume of 15 litres for a total of 445 litres.
Further enhancing the all-new BMW 4 Series Coupé’s sporty interior is BMW Individual Anthracite and Leather Dakota headliner upholstery. The interior trim of the BMW 428i Coupé Sport Line is further accentuated in high-gloss black with highlight trim finishers of Coral Red matt and a sports leather steering wheel. The all-new BMW 435i Coupé M Sport’s interior trim meanwhile, is complimented by Aluminium Hexagon with highlight trim finishers in Estoril Blue matt and an M Sport leather steering wheel – all of which are high-grade materials combinations offering unbeatable finish quality to highlight the premium ambience within the all-new coupé.
BMW ConnectedDrive: New functions, more safety.
The all-new BMW 4 Series Coupé deploys a unique combination of driver assistance systems and mobility services to set the benchmark in terms of safety, comfort and infotainment. With BMW ConnectedDrive, BMW’s commitment to driver orientation is further reinforced as the all-new coupé’s sporting and elegant cockpit is equipped with new functionality and ease of operation that is unmatched in its segment.
The all-new BMW 4 Series Coupé comes with circular black panel instruments and the advanced iDrive operating system with a free-standing flat screen monitor. Further offering outstanding in-car connectivity are features making their first appearance in the compact executive coupé segment – the New Generation Navigation System Professional that now includes 3D map display which is operated via iDrive Touch Controller with a touch-sensitive surface allowing numbers and letters to be written using a finger, and a full-colour BMW Head-Up Display in the BMW 435i Coupé to project relevant information, such as essential vehicle information as well as infotainment messages, directly in the driver’s field of vision.
Completing the in-car vehicle connectivity are USB and Bluetooth features to expand functionality for mobile phones and audio streaming, as well as BMW Live – a valuable web-based mobility service which is accessible via smartphone. BMW Apps can also be accessed via a menu through a smartphone which provides direct connection to web radio, Facebook and Twitter. The all-new BMW 428i Coupé also comes equipped with a HiFi loudspeaker system with nine speakers, while the all-new BMW 435i Coupé will continue to deliver the ultimate sheer driving experience with a Harman Kardon Surround Sound system with 16 speakers.
Colours available for the BMW 428i Coupé include Alpine White, Black Sapphire, Melbourne Red, Mineral Grey, and Glacier Silver. Meanwhile, Estoril Blue is an exclusive colour addition for the BMW 428i Coupé M Sport. For the BMW 435i Coupé M Sport, colours available are Alpine White, Mineral Grey and Estoril Blue.
