The original television series of “Yes, Prime Minister” was screened by the BBC between 1980 and 1990. A huge critical and popular success, the series received a number of awards, including several BAFTAs and in 2004 were voted in the Britain’s Best Sitcom poll. It was the favourite television programme of the then Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Dame Margaret Thatcher

Now there is stage version based on the series and the original writers of the classic BBC series, Antony Jay and Jonathan Lynn have reunited for an anniversary production with a brilliant, new satirical take on Whitehall.

The play follows the spirit and tone of the original TV series and is set at Chequers, the Prime Minister’s country residence. PM Hacker, who is, topically, leading a minority government, is staring disaster in the face and he and his Cabinet Secretary, Sir Humphrey Appleby are spinning out of control through the collapsing Euro and austerity measures in a world of 24 hour news, Blackberrys and sexed up dossiers. The economy is on the rocks, and the European leaders assembled for a conference at Lancaster House are getting nowhere.

There is just one grain of hope. The government of a dodgy, oil-rich country called Kumranistan is prepared to offer a $10 trillion loan if it is allowed to build a pipeline through Europe. It is an offer that would save Hacker’s bacon. There is a major snag however. Kumranistan’s Foreign Minister will cancel the deal unless an wild party is arranged to take place at Chequers for his gratification.

How will the Prime Minister and his team of advisers be able to deal with this dilemma and rescue the country from the edge?

If you haven’t seen the TV series, you will definitely be able to enjoy this cleverly written and wittily observed play because it is completely self-contained and doesn’t assume any prior knowledge.

Following three sell-out London West End seasons, two highly successful tours of the UK and rave reviews, “Yes, Prime Minister” is fast becoming the most successful play for a decade and now it is coming from London to Malaysia in May 2014 for the first time!
