1Porsche Hypercar On Its Way Or Not?
Porsche is said to be working on releasing a hypercar to challenge the McLaren, Ferrari and Pagani hypercars. Many Porsche engineers have long held the concern that their flat-six 911s can’t adequately compete with eight-cylinder Ferraris. Therefore, the entirely new family of engines is expected to have eight cylinders and use “new low-friction technology”.
One of the cars to feature this new flat-eight is codenamed 988 and will produce around 600hp and 542Nm of torque. Four turbochargers will lower consumption. No information is available about the car’s design, although it’s believed it will be inspired by the 918 Spyder.
Porsche’s eight-cylinder supercar is expected to reach customers in 2017, followed by a new generation of Boxsters, Caymans and 911s. The two entry-level sports cars are expected to have a turbo 2.0-liter flat-four outputting about 280 hp, with hotter versions set to have about 350 hp.
