Design Student Creates Windowless Merc SL Gullwing Concept

Here’s an interesting, an undoubtedly polarizing design. It’s a tribute to the original Gullwing – the Mercedes 300 SL. The first thing you’re going to notice is that it has no windscreen. And no side windows either. In fact, the roof’s the only place where light gets through. So how does one drive it?

Well, it’s called the SL|PURE and it’s not actually something that Mercedes is actually working on  – it’s just a scale model created by a transport designer as part of his Bachelor’s thesis. He conceptualized it as a self-driving vehicle and judging by the lack of air intakes, probably an electric vehicle as well.

Despite that bit of weirdness, it’s still a very cool design with some elements from the original Gullwing clearly visible. Here are some digital renderings showing it next to the classic Merc.
