Hybrid of the year – Hyundai IONIQ

2016-2017 saw quite a number of hybrid vehicle launches. The premium segment was first on the scene, tapping into government incentives by launching many plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.  As admirable as these efforts were, the biggest environmental impact would come from the mass market. And the only carmaker that took that push seriously was Hyundai with their locally-assembled IONIQ.

The IONIQ ditched the ‘plug-in’ option, aiming for the traditional hybrid route. As most urban Malaysians live in condominiums, this was a perfectly reasonable choice. And since the IONIQ is capable of driving in pure electric mode, most owners will still see their petrol bills slashed in half. Perhaps the best part about the car is just how much value it offers. It’s still got loads of technology and safety features at a price tag few competitors can match.
