Is BMW late to the ‘Pickup Truck’ sales party?
BMW X2 pickup truck will surely come to compete with the X-Class from Benz. With the demand for pickup trucks soaring in Europe and there seems to be no slowing down in ASIA, it is very likely that BMW will produce a pickup truck based on the all new X2 SUV which is about to be launched. However, we wonder, what will BMW name it as Mercedes is using the X-Class name, so BMW might not want to use the ‘X’ in its pickup truck.
Figures just in show that the European pickup sales rose 19% in the first half and are forecast to top 200,000 units next year because of the arrival of new models such as the Mercedes-Benz X-Class and the Renault Alaskan. Meanwhile, the Ford Ranger is still the top selling pickup truck in Europe. This means that BMW will not be late as long as this truck arrives in time for the next Frankfurt Motor Show in 2019.
The European pickup market is still relatively small. In the first half 80,300 were sold across Europe, a third of which went to customers in the UK, the region’s largest pickup market. In Germany, more than 10,000 pickups were sold and the third-biggest market, France, took just 9,450 units.
When BMW entered the SUV segment, they named their SUV (sports utility vehicle) a ‘SAV’ which is ‘sports activity vehicle’. For this new pickup truck, we predict BMW’s name for it will be X2 Activity Vehicle or XAV2! This could spawn the XAV3 and XAV5 in the future.
