BMW Group Malaysia Sponsors Guang, a Malaysian Film by Quek Shio Chuan

In 2011, the BMW Shorties saw Quek Shio Chuan rise to the challenge and demonstrated the theme of the year ‘Joy’ through his inspiring 14-minute short film, GUANG, which not only won the Grand Prize of RM75,000 in production grant, but also took home Best Screenplay, Best Sound Design and Best Actor awards. The short film also went on to win multiple awards internationally, including being the first Asian short film to win the Best Short Film Award at the prestigious 6th Alto Vicentino Film Festival in Santorso, Italy.

Seven years later, BMW Group Malaysia and the BMW Shorties are proud to once again support Quek in his pursuit of success, with the full-length feature film, GUANG.

GUANG tells a heart-warming story of an autistic young man, Wen Guang played by Kyo Chen, who has a passion and talent for music unbeknownst to anyone. Wen Guang has to navigate a world that doesn’t fully understands him when his brother, Di Di played by Ernest Chong, pressures him into looking for a job to make ends meet.

Before its official premiere in Malaysia, GUANG has gone on to win Best New Director (Quek Shio Chuan) and Best New Actor (Kyo Chen) at the 13th Chinese Youth Generation Film Forum in Wuhan, China. GUANG was also nominated for Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Actress at the 21st Shanghai International Film Festival and has also participated in the Focus on Asia Fukuoka International Film Festival 2018.

The short film version of GUANG won the BMW Shorties grand prize award in 2011. This year, Quek returns to the BMW Shorties as a judge, joining top names in the local filmmaking namely Lina Tan, Isazaly Mohd Isa, Tan Chui Mui and Nadira Ilana.
